This website is an attempt to help 21st Century believers and non-believers alike understand more fully what Calvin taught, even while not agreeing with certain aspects of his theology.
The website contains short summaries of, reflections on and questions from every chapter (sometimes more than one article per chapter) of each of the four books of Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion. The page references in each article are from Calvin: The Institutes of the Christian Religion; The Library of Christian Classics Volume XX, Edited by John T. McNeill and translated and indexed by Ford Lewis Battles, The Westminster Press, Philadelphia, 1960. If you would like to read along here is a link to The Institutes...click here to read. My name is John Judson and I have been a Presbyterian minister for more than 30 years. I have served three churches in that time and have watched as many, if not most of those, who joined those churches have come from non-Presbyterian backgrounds. This meant that they had little understanding of, or appreciation for, the Reformed tradition. This website is, in addition to my reasons given above, my attempt to deepen my current congregation's knowledge about why we believe what we believe and why we do many of the things that we do. Beginning in September of 2017 we will use one of these articles per week as a bulletin insert. If you have any comments about what is in these articles, I would love to hear from you, even if you don't agree with what is there and want to offer me a different take on Calvin. |
